Outdoor & Sport
Things to do

I have lived here for years and I still find something new every season. Here is where to start.

Windsurf & Kitesurfing
On the water · All levels

Torbole is one of Europe's windsurf capitals. The Pelèr (morning northerly, 6:00–11:00) and the Ora (afternoon thermal, 12:00–18:00) create reliable, near-perfect conditions from April through October. I recommend Segnana or the lakefront schools for rentals and lessons.

For kite and wingfoil lessons — including individual sessions at fair prices — I recommend Sandro Rigotti, who organises courses that are genuinely better value than most schools around. Find him on Instagram.

Best: April–October Kite & Wingfoil: Sandro Rigotti
🏄
SUP & Kayak
Morning is the magic hour

Rent a paddleboard or kayak for the calm morning hours — the lake is glassy and the mountains are doubled in the reflection. The morning is always the best time: once the Pelèr picks up, the lake becomes choppy and conditions change quickly.

Best before 10:00

Motorboats
Two options to explore the lake

Want to explore the lake by boat? Here are the two best options.

Option 1 — Guided tour from Torbole · Adamas Boat Tour. If you want to depart directly from Torbole, I recommend Adamas Boat Tour — a beautiful guided experience on the lake. Perfect if you want to relax and let someone else take the wheel.

adamasboattour.com

Option 2 — Self-drive from Malcesine · No licence up to 40hp. In the Trentino area navigation with rental boats is generally restricted. For a self-drive experience, rent a boat in Malcesine (14 km) and explore the southern part of Lake Garda freely.

From Torbole: Adamas Boat Tour Self-drive: Malcesine · No licence up to 40hp
⛴️
Navigazione Laghi · The Ferry
The most scenic way to travel

The lake ferry is both practical and genuinely beautiful. From Torbole you can reach Riva del Garda, Malcesine, Limone, and beyond. Take it one way, cycle back — or simply enjoy the journey as the cliffs drift past.

Timetables at navigazionelaghi.it — look under 'Tabella Orari'
🚴
Cycling & Mountain Biking
Trails for every level

From scenic lake-level loops to serious alpine challenges, Alto Garda is a cyclist's paradise. The Tremalzo tour is my absolute top recommendation — one of the most beautiful rides in all of northern Italy, with epic mountain panoramas and a descent you will not forget. Rent your bike or join a guided tour with Mandelli Bike or Velolake in Torbole, just steps from the apartment.

Mandelli Bike · Velolake — steps away E-bikes available
🧗
Rock Climbing · Arco
World-class crags · 4 km

Arco, just minutes away, is one of Europe's most celebrated climbing destinations. Hundreds of routes on warm limestone suit every grade. Guided sessions and gear hire available locally.

Best: spring & autumn 4 km from Torbole
🏊
Canyoning
Rivers & gorges · Guided

The valleys around Alto Garda hide spectacular canyons ideal for canyoning — abseiling, jumping, and sliding through natural water chutes. A thrilling half-day experience. Book through local adventure sports operators in Riva del Garda or Arco.

Guided tours only June–September
🍷
Wine Tasting
Trentino wines · Local cellars

The Alto Garda valleys produce exceptional wines largely unknown outside Italy — Marzemino, Teroldego, and the rare indigenous white Nosiola. Local cellars in the Valle dei Laghi offer informal tastings with stunning vineyard views.

In Riva del Garda, Cantina Comai is a wonderful spot for wine tastings — a warm, welcoming cellar where you can discover local wines in a genuinely authentic setting.

From the iconic Ponale cliffside path to the turquoise Lago di Tenno — every trail around Torbole rewards properly.

🪨
Sentiero Ponale · Riva del Garda
Iconic cliff path · Bar midway · Lago di Ledro

One of the most iconic trails on the entire lake — an ancient mule track carved into sheer cliffs above the water, starting from Riva del Garda. Walk or cycle along breathtaking panoramas. Stop at the panoramic bar along the way. For the adventurous, the full route continues all the way to the beautiful Lago di Ledro — a truly unforgettable full-day experience.

Monte Baldo
Cable car (easy) or alpine hike from Parcheggio Stanga

The 'Garden of Europe' — Monte Baldo's rich alpine flora has captivated botanists for centuries. The views from the summit ridge over the whole lake are simply unforgettable.

Option 1 — Cable car from Malcesine (Easy). Drive to Malcesine (14 km) and take the cable car up to 1,800m. Ideal for all fitness levels and families.

Option 2 — Monte Altissimo from Parcheggio Stanga (Medium–Hard). Follow trail marker 601 — around 2 hours one way to the summit. Breathtaking panoramas over Lake Garda throughout. Wear proper clothing and mountain boots or sturdy trainers. The rifugio is open during summer, so you can stop for a meal at the top.

Lago di Tenno
Hidden turquoise jewel · 30 min from Torbole

A true hidden jewel tucked above Riva del Garda. Lago di Tenno is renowned for its extraordinary turquoise water — an almost surreal shade of blue-green that has to be seen to be believed. Nearby lies the perfectly preserved medieval village of Canale di Tenno. A short drive, a scenic walk around the lake — one of my absolute favourite excursions.

Easy 30 min by car
🌅
Punta Larici
Panoramic viewpoint · Bike or walk

A spectacular viewpoint above Riva del Garda with sweeping views north toward Torbole. Drive to Pregasina (halfway) and walk or bike from there. The view from the top is among the finest on the entire lake.

Tremalzo · Bike Tour
My top recommendation for cyclists

If I could recommend only one cycling experience around Lake Garda, this would be it. The Tremalzo tour is one of the most beautiful bike routes in all of northern Italy — ascending through alpine meadows, crossing dramatic mountain passes, and descending with the lake spread out below in a panorama that feels almost too beautiful to be real. Rent your bike or join a guided tour with Mandelli Bike or Velolake in Torbole.

Hard Full day · 50–60 km Mandelli Bike · Velolake
🚴
Lago di Cavedine · Bike Ride
Easy scenic ride · Turquoise lake

A beautiful and accessible cycling route through the Valle dei Laghi, leading to the wonderful Lago di Cavedine — a turquoise lake surrounded by vineyards and mountains, with a totally different atmosphere from Lake Garda. The route is mostly flat or gently rolling, suitable for all levels. A perfect half-day ride, especially beautiful in spring and early autumn.

Beaches & Swimming
Best spots in Torbole

I know every corner of this shoreline. Here are my honest favourites.

🐕 Spiaggia dei Cani · better known as Spiaggia Paradiso
Dogs are welcome here — one of the few beaches where you can bring your four-legged friends. Also ideal for wingfoil and windsurf practice. A true local favourite.
🍕 Villa Cian
The beach in front of Villa Cian restaurant. Beautiful, convenient — order a pizza directly. Perfect.
💙 Baia Azzurra
A well-loved bay with clear blue water. A little more sheltered — great for families.
🌳 Colonia Pavese
A quieter local beach slightly north — with a children's playground right next to it. Perfect for families.
🏖️
Spiaggia Baitone · A secret worth keeping
Park at Navene · Walk down to the shore

This is one of those places that only locals really know. Park at Navene and make your way down to the Spiaggia Baitone — a wild, natural stretch of shoreline with crystal-clear water, not a sunbed in sight, no lido, no crowds. Just rocks, water, and the mountains rising behind you. Completely untouched and utterly authentic.

A few essential tips: go before 10:00 or after 17:00 to find space. Bring a thick towel or inflatable mattress — the rocks are very large and uneven, so comfort really matters. Bring your own water and snacks, as there are no facilities at all. Worth every bit of the effort.

Park at Navene Before 10:00 or after 17:00 Bring a thick mattress
Food & Drink
Good food, good wine, good view

These are the places I actually eat. No tourist traps, just honest recommendations.

Tinka Bar
Another great option — try the pancakes, they are exceptional. Relaxed local atmosphere, and for brunch there really is something for everyone.

Best view for a spritz
Il Fortino · Nago
The best place for a spritz with a view — period. Perched above Torbole in the village of Nago, Il Fortino offers one of the most spectacular lake panoramas for the price of an aperitivo. Go at 19:00, stay for two drinks.

Insider knowledge
What the guidebooks miss
🌬️
The two winds

The Pelèr blows from the north each morning (6:00–11:00), cool and strong. The Ora arrives after noon from the south, warm and powerful — both winds are for experienced windsurfers, not beginners. On the rare calm mornings when neither blows: go paddleboarding immediately — the lake is a perfect mirror.

☀️
Best time to visit Lake Garda

July and August are the most popular months — the lake is alive, warm, and full of energy. But if you prefer a quieter experience, May, June, and September are ideal. Personally, these are my favourite months on the lake.

💦
The hidden waterfall

Under the Ponale Road in Riva del Garda, there is a hidden waterfall completely invisible from the road — the only way to reach it is by SUP or pedal boat. Look for it near the abandoned hotel Casa della Trota. Morning only — the Pelèr wind makes the lake dangerous later.

🚲
Bicycles · A local word

A bicycle is the best way to get around Torbole. Always lock your bike well — bicycles are unfortunately the most commonly stolen item here despite Torbole being a very safe place.

Two great routes: the new cycle path toward Riva del Garda, or toward Arco with a stop at Bike Farm and the castle. Both easy and scenic.

🛒
Supermarket & Pharmacy

For groceries: Coop is closest but pricier — Lidl is not far and much better value. Pharmacy: Farmacia Chinaglia, at the roundabout in the centre of Torbole.

🛵
Scooter rental · Explore like a local

One of the best tips I can give: rent a scooter. Reach hidden coves, explore the Ponale waterfall, discover the Corno di Bo climbing walls. Freedom on two wheels.

🏪
Riva del Garda Market

Twice a month the heart of Riva del Garda comes alive — the market takes place on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month in the old town. Clothing, shoes, bags, fragrances and homewares at great prices.
